Goldfish have a number of varieties and this also includes types of scale, tail, fin, eye, and colour variations. Types of Goldfish and the varieties within those types These are the most common type of fish you will find in your local pet stores being sold both as pets and feeder fish. These fish are considered among the lowest quality fish and are often mass bred on a commercial scale in places like Japan, China and Thailand. Still a high quality fish, not best of breed per say but still a very high grade fish A GradeĪ grade above the mass bred fish you find in pet shops, still of good stock and breeding, but also has all the traits you maybe looking for if you are thinking about competitions and hobby breeding. The highest quality a breeder or judge thinks the fish is for it’s breed (best of the breed if you like) AA Grade below is a summary of the grades to make it easy to understand for the beginner to fish keeping. The grades represent the quality of the fish for it’s breed. Then we come back to the grade of a fish. The Koi fish are colored varieties of the Amur carp (Cyprinus rubrofuscus) where The goldfish are the coloured domestic version of Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) the goldfish Sub breed is Carassius auratus.Įven the Minnows are part of Cyprinidae family. the same is true with a cross breed of a Goldfish and a Koi Koi Fish and Goldfish are not the same fish, While they are both members of the carp family (Cyprinidae family) and can be cross bred into a mule type fish, they are two different branches of the carp family, in much the same way as the horse and donkey are the same family in the Equine family, and when cross bred produces the sterile mule as a result. To make things extra confusing there are two classifications of standards Īlso lets get this out of the way. These buyers are normally found in targeted fish stores (not your average pet store) who will try to get the best fish they can to auction or sell on to fish keepers with a mind for Competitions or even breeding. These standards have three main purposes, for judging in competitions, to help breeders select only the very best fish for breeding, the third is for buyers with a good eye. Under these we then get Grades of goldfish, this depicts what a breeder, retailers and competitions of the fish they think and feel the standards and quality of the goldfish are. The two being Common Goldfish and Fancy Goldfish There are a few types of Goldfish out there, So I am sure I’m going to miss a few of the breeds and cross breeds out thereĪt the end of the day they fall under one of two main types which then branch out into different breeds of fish under those types.
